On the morning of June 9, 2025, Israeli naval forces intercepted the Madleen, a British-flagged vessel from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. On board were 12 people, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Member of the European Parliament Rima Hassan. The ship was attempting to break the naval blockade on Gaza and deliver symbolic humanitarian aid.
The Madleen was redirected to the Israeli port of Ashdod, where all passengers were detained. Israel described the flotilla as a propaganda stunt “in support of Hamas,”.
